We can learn a lot from the greatest people of history. What’s more is that we can learn a lot when we start looking for the patterns across different industries and even more so across different fields.

Here are 13 of the lessons I’ve seen most consistently from top performers in the most demanding jobs in the most difficult fields.

1. Start Small

Barack Obama is one of the greatest presidents of modern times. His class, modesty and sense of justice are all trademarks of a good president. In my mind however, he is not only the greatest president, but one of the greatest statesmen who have ever lived.

Comparable to a Marcus Aurelius or Winston Churchill.

It’s easy to forget what kind of hard work and determination it took Barack Obama to get to where he is today.

It is especially easy to forget just how humble his beginning in politics were.

Obama started as a civil rights lawyer and organizer and in his own words,. he would organize meetings where there were more people organizing than there were attending. Not exactly what you picture yourself doing as a graduate from Harvard.
