Get what you ask for: 10 phrases to get others to give you what you want (every time)

We all want to be more persuasive, and for good reason. Persuasion is one of the most worthwhile skills to master.

Just as with most other worthwhile skills, persuasion takes time to master. As with most other worthwhile skills however, there are hacks, and shortcuts that we can use to become better, fast.

In the following I’m going to list 10 of these tactics. Enjoy.

1. Give a reason

If you’ve read my previous articles, you know that giving reasons for your request increases your compliance rate exponentially.

Saying the word ‘because’ is a trigger for most people, which means that we are much more likely to do things, when others give us a reason.

It might seem silly, but it works.

Using the word because is persuasive because humans like reasons. Whenever someone gives a reason — however obvious the reason may be — we are more prone to accept a request. This is what (Cialdini 1984) refers to as…
