The best life-advice I ever received — hint: it’s about money
Sometimes we meet a mentor — a wizard of sorts. Not exactly a Yoda per se, but more someone like Hermione. A person we can relate to, and who’s full of good advice.
Not too long ago, I was invited to a friends birthday. I didn’t know this at the time, but it turned out we had a friend in common that I knew from high school.
She is sort of like Hermione in a way.
I hadn’t seen her in years, and going to the party she was one of the people that I was most excited about seeing.
When we got there we very quickly got to talking about jobs, and she told me she was currently working as a human rights lawyer — she’d always been whip-smart and cared deeply about people, so this didn’t come as a huge surprise.
I then told her that I was working in investment banking, and that I didn’t really like it that much but that the money was good.
I said that I felt like that was a good indicator of value, to which she immediately exclaimed:
‘no it isn’t!’
And I was like:
What the fuck?!
